Co-creation from the Start

When organizing a conference on disability and mental health, we believe it is only logical to involve people with disabilities from the very beginning. This is what we call co-creation, and it is one of the cornerstones of Konekt’s approach.

From the start of the planning process, we actively involve people with disabilities. For example, young people from Brake-Out took on the task of designing the conference logo. After a brainstorming session, they came to the conclusion that the city of Ghent should be incorporated into the logo, along with the voice of people with disabilities. The result? A Ghent cuberdon (a ‘neuzeke’ candy) holding up placards.

The conference will be fully inclusive, and that includes accessibility. An in-depth consultation with the Konekteerders (community members and self-advocates) has already produced a long list of key considerations, addressing physical, communicative, and organizational barriers.

Co-creation continues throughout the event itself. People with disabilities will take on meaningful roles in all aspects of the organization—on and off stage, in logistics, hospitality, communications, and social activities.

Nice to meet you, I’m Glorian, co-host of EAMHID 2025

We got to know him through Brake-Out, and today he is co-organizing an international conference: meet Glorian Verneert. “When I graduated from special education, I was told that day care would be the best option for me. But I wanted more. I wanted to break out of the system. At Konekt, I found Brake-Out, a talent program for youngsters with cognitive disabilities.”

Through Brake-Out, Glorian discovered his talents. When he’s in the spotlight or on stage, he feels completely at home. Glorian is the perfect person to help organize and present the EAMHID conference in 2025. Curious about his talents? Be sure to watch the conference promo video!
